EMX at Industrial Automation Show in China: Introducing the LEX100 Light Measurement Sensor

Added Flexibility Provided from Relative RGB Values

EMX - ColorMax View SensorOne of the major points of confusion that some individuals have in terms of color sensors and quality control is the difference between absolute RGB values and relative RGB values. Understanding this, as well as the additional flexibility which relative RGB values provide, can help you and your business in many ways.

Most color sensors for manufacturing provide absolute values, which basically incorporate both color and luminosity to provide you with a set of readings. You’ll receive a separate Red, Green and Blue value up to 100%, so that you can make high speed, efficient color comparisons starting from a perfect base sample.

However, if you’re in a production environment where distance may be changing, then you’ll receive different readings as the distance changes. Even small differences in the distance between the sensor and the target can produce inconsistent results. This is because, as mentioned, absolute values provide you with a separate scale for Red, Blue and Green, incorporating both color and luminosity.

Relative RGB values, on the other hand, provide you with the ratio of Red to Blue to Green. Therefore, these readings can be thought of as providing you with a pie chart of your color, where the three components have different values to make up the whole, as opposed to individual bars each on a scale of 0 to 100%.

By offering you a ratio of values, relative RGB never changes as distance changes. The ratio of Red to Blue to Green will always stay the same, regardless of distance, and the corresponding changes in luminosity. Therefore, relative RGB values only take into account the color itself, and can be used in environments where distances aren’t fixed.
