Detect Transparent Colors with the ColorMax VIEW

ColorMax VIEW - EMX IndustriesThe ColorMax View sensor from EMX Industries, Inc., is a unique product which will open up a wide range of solutions and capabilities for your manufacturing and quality control processes.

With the ColorMax VIEW, you will be able to accurately detect and verify transparent or translucent color, the kind of which you will find on tinted materials, pharmaceutical or food and beverage packaging and containers, and more. It’s a great option for improving aesthetics and maintaining product uniformity, and even protecting from the damaging effects of light.

Detecting color in an opaque material is an easy process, by comparison, as little if any light passes through the material itself. This enables a sensor to simply shine a light directly on the target and “see” the color.

However, when you’re dealing with a transparent, translucent or tinted material, a standard sensor can’t detect or see that color because the clear target simply allows light to go through.

Luckily, we developed the ColorMax VIEW specifically for high-speed on-line color verification of translucent materials, combining our field-proven sensor technology with innovative hardware and setup.

Essentially, by utilizing a separate light source at the end of its cable, you can put the ColorMax VIEW in any position and pass the material through, allowing those colors to reach the sensor itself and then be accurately verified.

By establishing pass/fail criteria for color characteristics, you will be provided with real-time quality control while eliminating defects. With color variation of .5% and a 20 kHz switching frequency, you’ll be making use of the best specs in the industry.

Serial data output allows external systems to measure color and optimize the concentration of colorant, which improves efficiency and reduces cost, and external level monitoring is available through analog RGB output channels. Plus, the ColorMax VIEW is built to last with rugged construction and M30 housing to hold up to the demands of an industrial environment.

Added Flexibility Provided from Relative RGB Values

EMX - ColorMax View SensorOne of the major points of confusion that some individuals have in terms of color sensors and quality control is the difference between absolute RGB values and relative RGB values. Understanding this, as well as the additional flexibility which relative RGB values provide, can help you and your business in many ways.

Most color sensors for manufacturing provide absolute values, which basically incorporate both color and luminosity to provide you with a set of readings. You’ll receive a separate Red, Green and Blue value up to 100%, so that you can make high speed, efficient color comparisons starting from a perfect base sample.

However, if you’re in a production environment where distance may be changing, then you’ll receive different readings as the distance changes. Even small differences in the distance between the sensor and the target can produce inconsistent results. This is because, as mentioned, absolute values provide you with a separate scale for Red, Blue and Green, incorporating both color and luminosity.

Relative RGB values, on the other hand, provide you with the ratio of Red to Blue to Green. Therefore, these readings can be thought of as providing you with a pie chart of your color, where the three components have different values to make up the whole, as opposed to individual bars each on a scale of 0 to 100%.

By offering you a ratio of values, relative RGB never changes as distance changes. The ratio of Red to Blue to Green will always stay the same, regardless of distance, and the corresponding changes in luminosity. Therefore, relative RGB values only take into account the color itself, and can be used in environments where distances aren’t fixed.

At EMX Industries, we have designed our ColorMax color sensors to provide relative RGB values. This provides our clients with fantastic flexibility on their production and manufacturing lines, and enables continued excellence, consistency and quality control.

Plus, the visual application that our sensors work with makes it easier than ever to interpret the results, and make fine-tuned adjustments as necessary. It’s incredibly intuitive and user-friendly, and separates the ColorMax series from the competition.

The Importance of Detecting Colors Without The Influence of Ambient Light

Color Max - Color Sensor
EMX Color Max -1000

One of the biggest hidden factors lying in wait to sabotage the color readings that your sensors are providing is ambient light. It’s of the utmost importance that ambient light does not affect the quality of your sensors, or else you could end up with wildly divergent and inaccurate readings, and ultimately, you’ll be suffering from inconsistent and inferior results.

Ambient light includes any additional light which can affect the way that a color appears, although the color itself of course doesn’t actually change. It’s always present, and it can change the readings you receive at 8 am compared to 8 pm, or on one side of the room compared to the other side.

How Can EMX Products Help Diminish The Effects of Ambient Light?

That’s why we have designed our ColorMax series using unique, sophisticated algorithms which
ignore luster and reject the influences of ambient light. This internal algorithm system ensures
that the readings you receive are entirely accurate and true to life, as opposed to affected by
environmental factors which are otherwise out of your control.

Our ColorMax sensors eliminate the effects of ambient light from color measurement. This
enables them to collect accurate color readings and provide consistent, verifiable RGB values.

Removing ambient light will improve your results regardless of where in your manufacturing
process our sensors are being used. In production, you’ll improve consistency and overall
quality control. Later, you’ll be able to swiftly and efficiently identify different parts and
components and make sure that each individual piece is the right thing, in the right place, at the
right time.

This is a unique capability that you will not find available in many other color sensors. So if you
have been experiencing inconsistency, inefficiency and inaccuracy in production and quality
control, then it’s time for a change.

Experience the difference and the quality that our ColorMax series can provide your business.
With over a dozen individual models in the series, there’s bound to be one which is the perfect
choice for your needs.
